How fast are you?

2009 internet statstic

Avg broadband speed by country according to Internet World stats:

USA: 4.8mbps
France: 17.6mbps
Sweden: 18.2mbps
Finland: 22mbps
Korea: 46mbps
Japan: 61mbps

Japan is a badass, but what I want to know is why those jerks in France are more than 3 times faster than us.

Canada wasn't on the list. I'm guessing they still use dial up or they just leach a wireless signal from their neighbor (The US) .

SCREW HEALTHCARE - I want 61mbps.

I found you can rent a OC48 line, which is 2,488mbps - which kicks the crap out of Japan....It will set you back about $15,000-$60,000 a month.
At those speeds you could down load a full tera in less than a min. (I'm gonna need a few more seeders...)

I've got 6mbps DSL, faster than the average here, but everyone else is kicking my ass.

I remember about 5 years ago you could get a 100Mbps line in china for $100USD/mth
It's the thought that counts, not how many people die because of it.

The US is way behind the rest of the developed world in Internet penetration for one reason: cost. Broadband providers can't be bothered to run lines into rural and underdeveloped areas of the country because the return on investment doesn't justify it.

As to why we don't have faster broadband for those who can get it? Well, FIOS is supposedly on its way around the country, but it's a big country... Yeah, we kinda suck though.
