a new rig

im building my little bro a rig, and this is what he's getting. good thing i'll be "test driving" it for 2 months or so. :) what a nice brother i am $858 shipped to my door. will be down to 800 if/when the MIR's deliver.

CPU: phenom II 920

mobo: Asus 790gx crossfire mobo, couldn't justify the fx, no overclocking

video card 4870 1 gig

Ram 2x2 gig ddr2 800 (will be running at 1066)

hard drive: WD black 640 gig hdd

power supply: PC power and cooling :)

all in all this should be a very powerful system that should last 3 years. I will update when i get parts, how the build goes, etc. I bought everything from the egg, and im not paying interest for 6 months, (read never). little bro gets comp when i get the money :)

gripes about looking for parts.

1. there is only one power supply under 450 watts (i should mention that is 80+ certified) that has 2 pci express 6 pin power cords. that power supply is the one in my computer i have now, but costs 100 bucks (i paid 55). all i needed for this system was 20-25A on the 12v rail. the video card has 2 6 pin connectors for power. yes, i could have used the provided adapter, but honestly, i shouldn't need to. this system will idle around 100w (20% of the psu) which is borderline good efficiency. (as a note, if your using less than 20% of your power supply, your efficiency goe well under 50% (meaning to use 50w you'd be using 100w from the wall).

2. finding a vendor for an ati card. xfx now makes them, but the 512mb version of the 4870 is more than this 1 gig version... umm no thanks for the price.

no more gripes

i ordered no aftermarked cpu cooler, which normally i would think was stupid. however, this system will not be overclocked. im gonna build it, and test it (and wow with it obvi). I'll see what the temps look like and if they are good, and its not too loud, i'll be happy. i may experiment and use the zalman 9500 from my current pc and see how well it cools it. but thats a lot of work.

@lealla. you wanted a 1k build that could read blu ray. on newegg, a dvd burner/blue ray rom drive goes for about 80 bucks. this system with that drive would be about 920. this leaves room for a differnt case, seeing as you probably wouldn't want a window and lights.

also im interested to see how well this case does. i personally wouldn't have bought this case, but you can get a lian li midtower, all aluminum for about the same price.

There will be pics, and it will be glorious. (i route wires like a pro).

updates incoming

predictions, i will be over 50 frames in any raid situation, with quest helper on :). more than 30 fps in dalaran.

This system would be good at anything 1920*1200 and below (24 inch monitor resolution) for almost any games.

There is more to life than pew pew you know, like staying out of the fire so you can live to pew pew another day
