Computer cases!

Post by Arlan » Thu Apr 23, 2009 11:43 pm

Building a system for my gf has me itching to upgrade mine. First upgrade is a new case. I'm replacing my onld Antec (titan 650)full tower, it's pretty nice, but it's old. The door on the front broke off, and the front usb port is broken. It doesn't seem to cool that well either.

My new case:

Just something really cool I found while looking for cases:

I wish I had fabricating skills like that.

Post your cases!

The NZXT Tempest got good reviews on MaximumPC and is their current recommended mid-tower case.

i recently purchased a nzxt case in my little brothers build....
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811146025

its okay from a builders standpoint.

the case for my pc is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811144005

again... average.

the appollo (NZXT) case is a good size, and has ample room for a 4870. if you like to neatly route cables... as in you open the case no cables, then this case is a small pain. you cannot route cables behind the backblate anywhere higher than the hard drive cage. that was my gripe. otherwise, its is perfectly fine. it came with 2 120mm fans which are quiet, but move almost 0 air. also has really cheap tooless design. it is incapalbe of actually holding the 4870 graphics card. i ended up screwing it in with some screws i had laying around (yes they are case screws).

the one lealla listed has a bottom mounted power supply. personally, i don't like the idea of them. eveyone who i know who has built a system with one didn't enjoy it.

the case i have, i have since replaced the psu that came with it (ugh it wasn't that nice) with a seasonic unit. i like everything about the case except the 80 mm fans... ooo i hate 80 mm fans... soooooooo lound.

i would list what you find important in a case.
-noise
-cooling
-looks
-where you keep it (the last 2 are about if you want a window or LEDs in/on your case. do you want it to be able to guide ships into port?)
-functionality
-size
-single or dual slot graphics? (does it spit the hot air from the gpu out of the case?)

i would say that 90% of cases have more cooling than 99% of people need. 1 120mm fan in a well vented case, with good cable management will cool everything but the most epicly hot systems.

personally, i like simple no frills quiet cases. give me a black case, simple layout, very open though. have noise dampening material, and 2 120mm fans that are heat sensitive adjustable. i do not like tooless cases. 90% of them are done very cheaply and do not work well at all and you end up having to screw stuff in anyway.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811119161

is a very good case for the money.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811133073

is a very nice case. its pretty epic cuz its one of the few cases you can buy that has a "wireless" fan on the door. the fan wire is part of the door (i believe its glued/behind a wall) and there are metal clips that connect at the base of the side panel and the case. so you take the side off, no stupid ass wire clinging. thats the best feature ever. some cases also have hard drive backplates. so you literally just slide your hard drive in, and you plug the wires into the side of the backplate. if you change hard drives often, its not a bad option.

I like it. Too bad it won't be $80 for much longer. Let's hope it goes on rebate again.

I almost bought that same case, Arlan. When I purchased my new PC, I was thinking about throwing my old hardware in a new case for the g/f. But she talked me into not spending more money because the existing case was "fine for her". ha...

And yeah. I like that case there too Gnomer.

So I bought a new case, and what happens? A couple days later my psu starts to crap out. Probably should have spent the money on a new psu, oh well. I love this case, looks sweet and tons of room. The dual 250mm fans are very quiet and cool very well. I would say build quality is not quite as nice as Antec, but it's a very nice case for the money. For $80 with free shipping I don't think you can go wrong, I also got a free external drive enclosure with it.

Edit: looks like the free shipping deal is gone, still $40 off though.
